When I envisioned this series, I had this grand plan I was going to carefully watch each of the movies and develop ingenious ways to intertwine my love of cinema with film-inspired recipes. I’m a huge fan of the Marvel movies, so one of my goals was to work my way through the catalog of movies leading up to the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War on April 27, 2018.
The first movie I decided to watch was Captain America: The First Avenger because…well, he was the first Avenger and therefore this should be the first movie anybody watches among the Marvel movies. Yeah, yeah, I know…Iron Man was the first movie released in the franchise. But that’s only by release date. I’m looking to create a continuity along the timeline within the movies…so Cap is my first movie.
Honestly, I didn’t realize how hard this movie was going to be to tie to anything culinary. I’ve got amazing outlines for many of the other movies I’m going to be writing about over the next few months. But as the first movie I’m working with, Captain America: The First Avenger presented some challenges I simply wasn’t prepared for. But we’ll all forge ahead anyway…it’s what Cap would want us to do!
If you’re not familiar with the movie…who are you? It’s kind of hard to imagine there are people who aren’t familiar with Captain America. He’s been with us in comic book form since 1968. He’s been featured in enough blockbuster movies you’d be hard-pressed not to have some familiarity with the character. Rather than  re-“Cap” (see what I did there?) the movie, just go and watch it if you don’t know the story.
Normally at this point in a Dinner-and-a-Movie post I’d craft together an entire meal from different parts of the movie, but Captain America isn’t really conducive to that. So I’m going to take you through a day in the life of Steve Rogers and let you know what he would normally eat.
Breakfast
Our all-American hero is a pretty basic guy. Eggs over easy, bacon, toast, grape jelly, milk, and juice. If he’s looking to shake things up, he might have stovetop oatmeal with strawberries or blueberries. He might even explore some of the other ways to make oatmeal more flavorful and fun!
Lunch
Steve would continue to stick to the basics for lunch. He’d likely have a cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate milkshake. He’d probably pick this up at his favorite diner, but it’s also possible he’d make this at his apartment. As a boy from Brooklyn he’s not going to get wild…it’s lunch, so a quick but substantial meal will fill the bill!
Dinner
After work, our hero likely does a workout…building up a huge appetite. Being a superhero is hard work, and his metabolism must be really amazing, considering his super strength, speed, etc. So he’ll be looking for a substantial dinner to end his day. He’d likely start with a mixed green salad followed by homemade cornbread, green beans with bacon, and Salisbury steak. If he wants to go on auto-pilot he might make slow-cooker Salisbury steak. I’m pretty sure he’d cap (😉) this meal with one of our all-time American desserts, chocolate chip cookies, but as a bachelor he’s likely going to make them in the pan variation instead of individual cookies!
Wrap-Up
So there you have it…a day in the culinary life of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. While this isn’t exactly the way I envisioned this series, I think it’s kind of fun to step into the fictional world and come up with a menu for the character. Keep your eye out for future posts and while you’re waiting, make it a great day in the kitchen!
